Such news unsettles U.S. workers, particularly those who work in industries such as information technology, which shed more than 7,000 employees during first quarter 2005, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Marvin's comments 4.1 million jobs is a relatively small amount. It is only 1% of the total available jobs in the US according to the article. But there is no reason why this number will not continue to grow. In a sense we in the Intelligence Community are protected from the job losses but I wonder how long this will last. I think that within 10 years IT professionals in the Intel Community will need to worry more because software companies will be developing software that is sophisticated and easy enough for power users and/or business analysts to use out of the box. End users or business analysts will be able to create their own applications with the need for software engineers. It will be unfortunate for those companies and individuals that are inflexible and are not prepared for the changes to come. However, we (the Esenai team) will prepare for the change and be proactive about making sure we either adjust and become business analysts or the developers of the sophisticated software or get out of the market and enter an up-and-coming market or a create an entirely new market!
